OUT OF THE ASHES
For a Great 2021, Get Rid of the 2020 Attitude
The arrival of January 1, 2021 did not magically make things better. You have to shake off the muck of 2020 and make some changes to yourself to help 2021 be the year you want it to be.
You have to start with you.
Step 1: I Hated…
Make a list of the 10 things you hated the most in 2020.
Yup, we’re giving you permission. Vent, swear, scream. Get it all out. Then focus on the emotions, actions or thoughts each of these things created in you. This is where the toxicity of 2020 resides. It’s not what happened in 2020 that made the year so hard; it’s how you responded to each of those events.
Still waiting for that permission slip to be who you want to be? Here you go.
Step 2: NEVER Again
List the 5 things that you will commit to never bringing into 2021.
Look at your “I hated” list and pick 5 of those things. Commit to not bringing those things to the new year and share your list with someone who will hold you accountable.
You are more successful when you have an accountability partner. Here’s why.
Step 3: I Want…
Reflect on the 5 things you will create in 2021 that will make the year great.
Imagine what you want to happen in 2021. Really feel what life will be like when (note: not if, but when) these happen. Experience them in your mind. Get clear. Get lots of details.
Learn how to visualize and imagine to create what could be.
Step 4: The Action Plan
You identified the worst of 2020. You picked the things that will *not* follow you to 2021. You imagined what 2021 will be like for you. But now what? How do you actually shake the 2020 attitude and make your 2021 goals reality? Create an action plan.
- Clearly define your end goal: what are you working toward?
- Determine what success looks like: how do you know you’ve achieved your goal?
- Define your motivation: what will keep you focused as you work toward achieving your goal? Consider creating mini-goals, little things you can do that help you work toward your goal and keep you focused and motivated.
- Pick your accountability partner: who will help you stay true to the goals you’ve created, helping you achieve everything you define for yourself? It could be a family member, a friend, a colleague or a Coach.
Working with a Coach can help you get clear about where you are today, where you want to be and help you close the gap between the two.
Our 4-step approach can help you make 2021 the year you want (and maybe even need it) to be. Show up in 2021 better, stronger, more focused and more energized than before. It’s time to shake the 2020 attitude.
